Hello!

I'm Berry van Someren,
an engineer who enjoys exploring ideas by building them.

This site is a collection of professional work, technical experiments, and side projects:
from LiDAR and 3D reconstruction to generative art, game technology, and differentiable painting.

Most of these projects started with some version of: "I wonder if this could work?"

Splart: Differentiable Painting

Splart is a mix of concepts from Drarwing and 3D Gaussian Splatting, and uses Differentiable Rendering to generate beautiful paintings.

Drarwing on the Web!

Drarwing has been optimized and streamlined, and now runs via Google Cloud Functions, accessible directly from any web browser.

Doodlebot: A Lego Wall Plotter

Inspired by a project from Marco Schulte, I created a vertical wall plotter using Lego Mindstorms.

Drarwing Extra: Pointillism

Revisiting the Pointillism-based predecessor of Drarwing's Painting algorithm.

Hot-Reloading Ray-Marched Python Games (POC)

I created a screen shader playground which uses Python for game logic and hot-reloads your code and content changes.

Drarwing: Darwinian Drawing

As a hobby project I used a genetic algorithm for approximating the painting process.

Toucan: Low Poly Effects

As a hobby project I made a tool for giving images a low-poly effect.

Street Ortho Lidar

For my work at Cyclomedia, I reprojected and stitched street-level imagery to produce aerial maps with a level of detail that real aerial imagery would never reach.

Neural multi-view segmentation-aggregation for joint Lidar and image object detection

During my master's thesis at Cyclomedia, I used artificial neural networks to automatically detect and accurately position objects, combining panoramic imagery and Lidar point clouds.

Feature Based Point Cloud Registration

During an internship at Cyclomedia I matched point clouds based on different features.

Voxel-based 3D Reconstruction

For our Computer Vision class at Utrecht University we did automatic 3D-reconstruction of real-life scenes.

Bringing AbbeyCore to iOS

Abbey Games was a small indie game studio based in Utrecht. During an internship, I ported their in-house game engine, AbbeyCore, to iOS.

Organising Indievelopment

Indievelopment was an international indie game conference. The event quickly grew from a few hundred visitors to a few thousand, and for a while was a prominent event in the Dutch game industry.
